Gilbeber Laithe
Gilbeber Laithe
Type: Building
Submitted by:David Whipp
Item Location: see location on map BB18 5SU

Description:

Gilbeber Laithe is a ruined field barn close to the lowest point of Barnoldswick (144m above sea level).

The barn is set amongst the drumlins to the north of Barnoldswick. (Drumlins are egg shaped hillocks sculpted by the ice sheets of the last ice age.) The barn is largely built from limestone which is the underlying rock at this part of Barnoldswick.

Gilbeber Laithe is close to a public footpath which runs from Greenberfield Lane to Bracewell Lane. The path is on the route of the Beating the Bounds walk.

Close to the old barn is a field style typical of those found in this area.more

Item Location: Lister Well Road, off Manchester Road, Barnoldswick. BB18 5HE

Description:

If you walk up Lister Well Road over The Weets towards Old Gisburn Road, you eventually come to a small stone building in a field on your right. Shooting Butts
Shooting Butts
Type: Building
Item Location: Weets Top BB18 5HE

Description:

If you walk up Lister Well Road to the top of Weets and take a grassy path to the left through a gateway, you will come across some old shooting butts camouflaged amongst the heather and grass, next to a small pond.

In the past, structures similar to these may have been used by local inhabitants to stalk and shoot wild wolves that used to roam the countryside. Unhappily, the wild wolves were hunted to extinction which is why nowadays in Barnoldswick you only ever see domestic wolves (or dogs) in captivity.

It is well worth the walk through the beautiful countryside above Barnoldswick to discover these hideaways.

The New Ship - Walmsgate Independent Methodist Chapel; an introduction.
The New Ship - Walmsgate Independent Methodist Chapel; an introduction.
Type: Building
Submitted by:David Whipp
Item Location: Walmsgate, Barnoldswick BB18 5PS

Description:

Walmsgate Independent Methodist Chapel - The New Ship - is the only surviving 19th Century non-conformist chapel in Barnoldswick. The building is one of the gems of Barnoldswick's ecclesiastical architectural heritage.

The chapel presents a splendid imposing façade onto Walmsgate, dwarfing the surrounding terraced cottages.

Inside, the chapel retains its original layout, with ranks of Victorian pews on both ground floor and balcony.

The chapel is such a fine (and now rare) example of its type, that it is a listed building.

The building came very close to going the same way as Barnoldswick's other chapels when the building became badly affected by dry rot.more
